The super moon rises over the Statue of Liberty during twilight. The symbol of freedom is located on Liberty Island in the middle of New York Harbor, in Manhattan, New York City.

This year 2014 has a total of five super moonsToday, the super moon will appear for the third time this year. So far making it is the closest and largest full moon in 2014. August 10th’s super moon should be especially large because it will become full at the same hour of perigee.

The name super moon was coined by an astrologer, Richard Nolle, over 30 years ago. It was popularized and came to be the accepted term for most people only in the past few years.

A super moon is a full moon which occurs with the moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit.
